WINTHROP FARMERS MARKET

Awarded $4,999 to this nonprofit organization, to fund family--friendly enrichment activities and entertainment that foster community engagement, support local artists, and promote food education -- including live music, children’s entertainment, and interactive food demonstrations to create a welcoming atmosphere and attracts more visitors, supports local vendors, and strengthens community connections.

WHS ROBOTICS TEAM

Awarded $3,000 to the Winthrop High School Robotics Team to cover the fee and materials to compete in the 2025 Botball Robotics competition, in order to give high school students opportunities to gain exposure in the emerging field of robotics and artificial intelligence.

WHS TRADES SCHOLARSHIPS  Awarded a total of $6,000 to Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School (The Voke) graduating seniors, to support them as they go into the trades.  Three scholarships are awarded, each recipient receiving $2,000 to help cover the expense of further education and other costs related to pursuing a career in the trades.

WINTHROP CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Winthrop Foundation sponsored the Chamber with a $13,500 grant in both 2023 and 2024, to support the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting.  The Trustees of the Winthrop Foundation are thrilled to see this flagship community event continue to enrich and enchant the families of our town. The Trustees are dedicated to ensuring that the Chamber continues to take the lead in organizing this beloved tradition, which brings our community together during the holiday season, as one of the most outstanding and successful community events each year.

WINTHROP DEPT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

Awarded $5,000 to sponsor the annual Community Health Forum, founded by former Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo. Each year, the Community Health Forum offers the town of Winthrop an enriching program that benefits hundreds of community members.

RISE & SHINE INFANT DROP-IN PROGRAM OF FOR KIDS ONLY

Provided a $15,000 seed-grant to help support the Rise & Shine infant drop-in program offered by For Kids Only. Foundation funding provides intial support of the program as it seeks to become a permanent offering of FKO in the years to come.

WHS CLASS OF 2025

Awarded $1,500 to sponsor year-end celebratory events for the WHS seniors who graduate in May 2025.

WINTHROP LITTLE LEAGUE

Awarded $35,000 to support the field dougout replacement project.

WINTHROP YOUTH FOOTBALL

Awarded funding to replenish helmets, shoulder pads, footballs and practice jerseys for the Winthrop Youth Football program.

TRADES SCHOLARSHIPS - WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL & THE VOKE (Northeast Metropolitan Vocational Regional High School)

In 2022, the Foundation awarded WHS with two $1,500 scholarships for two graduating seniors planning to go into the trades.

In 2024, Winthrop Foundation awarded three $1,500 scholarships for WHS graduating seniors going into the trades, and three $1,500 scholarships to Winthrop seniors attending the Voke (Northeast Vocational Regional High School) who plan to enter into the trades.

WINTHROP YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Awarded $13,240 to this 501c3, to fund a 12-week intensive hockey skill-building program, to improve the skills of young skaters while having no impact on the cost to their families.

WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Awarded $10,000 for the renovation of Veteran's baseball field, including a complete renovation of the infield to fix concerning areas such as growing weed, lips around the infield, improper clay, and worn out sod. 

TREE WINTHROP/GROW (previously Winthrop Loves Trees)

Awarded a substantial $70,400 grant to enhance the urban canopy and green spaces within the town. Funding allocated to Tree Winthrop, a nonprofit organization, was utilized for procuring numerous trees, tree bags, implementing the Adopt-a-Tree volunteer watering initiative, establishing pollinator gardens, and conducting an inventory of trees situated on public land in the town. Commencing in September 2022, the project has made significant progress and is on track to conclude by the spring of 2024, enriching the town with both aesthetic appeal and valuable environmental benefits.

ROBOTICS TEAM AT WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL

The student-led WHS Robotics Team received a $5,000 grant to design and build a robot for the upcoming 2022-2023 FIRST Robotics Competition. This competition focuses on the production, programming, and testing of student-built robots. The grant money was used to cover expenses for robot components and competition registration, providing WHS students with valuable opportunities to engage in manufacturing, engineering, and coding while creating innovative features and designs for the robot. This project also served as a platform to introduce students and parents to the exciting world of engineering.

DOG PARK

The Town of Winthrop received a $100,000 grant to bolster its own funds to develop and construct a dog park. The Winthrop Dog Park, a long-anticipated project, reached a significant milestone with groundbreaking and completion in September 2022. Located on Veterans Rd along the southeastern edge of Miller Field, the Winthrop Dog Park offers a space for all resident humans and canines to relish.



WINTHROP LITTLE LEAGUE

Awarded $25,000 to construct new Little League batting cages, netting, fencing and groundwork, as well as installation and labor costs. 


WINTHROP PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization)

Awarded $1,500 for "Hope for the Holidays" gifts cards provided to the neediest of Winthrop families during the winter holidays.

HOMETOWN HEROES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

A special award of $2,000 in recognition of the above-and-beyond work done by the Winthrop Dept of Health, its director Meredith Hurley, and her team of volunteer nurses and health professionals, to keep residents as safe as possible during the most difficult days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

POLICE EXPLORERS - TOYS FOR TOTS

Awarded $1,000 to the Police Explorers "Toys for Tots" holiday gift giving for families in need.

CASA: Community Action for Safe Alternatives

Awarded $10,000 in rapid-response funds to increase outreach to youth for mental health support at the onset of COVID-19.

CASA strives to improve the quality of life for all Winthrop residents and provide a safer community for children and youth by identifhing and providing prevention resources. CASA educates familiar and individuals about the effects of substance abuse as a complex issue and assists them in creating healthier environments.

WINTHROP PUBLIC LIBRARY

Awarded $3,500 during the onset of COVID-19 to purchase software that allows for virtual public programming in lieu of the library's closure.

The Winthrop Public Library celebrates its 125th Anniversary in 2024!

MI AMORE

Awarded $10,000 at the onset of COVID-19, to expand emergency food resources for vulnerable Winthrop residents. Awarded $1,000 during COVID-19 for emergency shelter.

Mi-Amore is a veteran led, 501c3 project that provides food resources, including recovered edible food, to the town's elderly, single and struggling families, and those recovering from addiction. Mi-Amore collaborates with public school system, community leaders, and faith institutions of Winthrop to identify and support at-risk populations, with an all-volunteer community and Board that delivers meals, fresh fruit, vegetables and bread to support residents in need.

FOR KIDS ONLY - WINTHROP

Awarded $10,000 to allow FKO to modify its operations and activities per the state's Covid-19 re-opening guidelines and provide full-day summer programming for 75 Winthrop children.

FKO-Winthrop is a nonprofit offering school-age youth out-of-school time enrichment and social-emotional learning opportunities that help them learn, grow and thrive.

COTTAGE PARK YACHT CLUB

Received a $5,000 grant to boost the promotion of the 2021 Snipe International Racing Association's Western Hemisphere and Orient Championship Regatta, offering Winthrop a platform to shine. The grant was utilized to support various expenses including race management, event celebrations, media center arrangements, hospitality, and costs linked to international participants and officials.

POINT SHIRLEY ASSOCIATION

Awarded $3,600 to support emergency staging services and revenue loss due to COVID-19 during the onset of the pandemic.

WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL

Awarded $2,500 to support alternative 2020 senior graduation events in light of COVID-19 preventing the annual celebratory graduation ceremony.

WINTHROP MIDDLE SCHOOL

Awarded $3,800 to provide subsidized books to WMS students during COVID-19 to enhance summer reading and future summer programs.

COVID-19 EMERGENCY SUPPORT FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

At the start of the COVID-19 crisis in the early months of 2020, dozens of small businesses in Winthrop were at risk of closing their doors. The Trustees of Winthrop Foundation provided $750 vouchers to over 25 local establishments to help them navigate the challenging times. The vouchers, in the form of gift certificates, were distributed by a local nonprofit to families and individuals in need, who then purchased items -- groceries, prepared food, etc. -- from local establishments.
